I am in the process of setting up a website for our share house using wordpress on a LAMP server. There is no image gallery function in wordpress. Can anyone recommend a great free piece of software to upload / publish pictures from your computer and have them displayed in a gallery located on the website i have created. ?

I would bin wordpress and redo your site using Joomla this is free software and has loads of components free and charge able all configured from the admin backend
