Your Questions About Publishing Software

Paul asks…
What is the best book publishing software for my home computer?
I want to typeset a book and add pictures then have it bound–any suggestions?

admin answers:
I think Microsoft Word would be best, you’d be surprised at the amount of formatting you can do with it.

Sandy asks…
What is the best publishing software?
I have put together 140 pages of training notes on a Word document. This includes pictures and tables. What I would like to do is shuffle things around and try a more appealing presentation style but the Word document makes that difficult. Does anyone have a better idea?
Thanks

admin answers:
If you’re after a more professional look than you can achieve with Word, take a look at either Adobe’s InDesign or QuarkXPress.
Both are professional level desktop publishing/design packages which offer a huge range of features and controls to create a professional looking document.
InDesign is probably going to be your best bet especially if you already have other Adobe software which it works with seamlessly.
You will have access to master pages where you can place items which appear on each page so they will all be placed consistently, Paragraph, Character and Object styles so you can easily format your text and and graphic elements consistently as well as pretty much any text effect etc. That you could possibly think of.
You can choose to link all your text pages or if each is a separate topic and you want to be able to move individual topics around, keep each as a separate text frame.
InDesign also handles tables and can handle a large variety of picture formats. These are placed as linked files which helps keep file sizes manageable.
InDesign is available for both pc and mac from Adobe.
