Your Questions About Publishing Software Apple

David asks…

Need help putting my website up from iweb, cannot publish site.?

I’m trying to get my website up and running, which I have designed using apple‘s iweb software. I have brought a domain name and then brought hosting from one.com. I have entered the information and am pretty sure it’s all correct. Every time I click on ‘publish site’ it says that a connection for ftp.katied.co.uk cannot be established.

These are the details…what do I put in each box?

Technical information for katied.co.uk

FTP:
Host:ftp.katied.co.uk
Username:katied.co.uk
Password:**************
E-MAIL:
IMAP server:imap.katied.co.uk
POP3 server:pop.katied.co.uk

Steven asks…

The end of the world… Why 2012? And why should I be concerned?

K so the world is gonna end in 2012. Well, according to some people it is… The thing is, there have been so many other times the world was supposed to end, but absolutely nothing happened. Nada, zip, zilch! The people in those times were so illiterate that they pretty much fell for anything the ‘prophets’ fed to them. …How is today any different? When ever there’s a title “The world ending next year! New discovery proves it!!”, it’s always conveniently a ‘new discovery’ that predicted some major event; which was published AFTER the event already happened. Why don’t they ever publish these predictions BEFORE these major events??

And they always somehow find a way to link some of the most random, completely unrelated info and some how make fit into some pattern. 20394 oranges picked in some random probably non-existant farm, + 983782 car crashes in the world today, – 2131 porno movies I downloaded today, ÷ 32 (some random number I swear is somehow related to the end of the world) = 31,313. That’s an uneven number so that clearly means the world will end in 2012!!

I suppose it doesn’t help that media sources are pushing & stretching things. Example; they had the Y2K problem stretched so much that they actually had people believing it was going to be the end of the world. The media had people convinced that nuclear plants would meltdown, and that everything would be reset back to 1900. Y2K was never an issue because the problems with the whole year ‘rollover’ has been solved since the 1970s. (In CPUs, at-least) Only the little rinky dink micro controllers for the VCRs & coffee makers couldn’t handle the year 2000, because the chips literally couldn’t count that high. With today’s (and the 90’s) 32-bit CPUs, we’re good until 2038. 64-bit CPUs have solved this issue completely for the next 28 thousand years. Some computers, like Apple computers, were Y2k compliant as early as 1988. (Both software and CPU) I mean, of course y2k was definitely something to be taken seriously, however, the media has severely blown it out of proportion.

Considering the previous doomsday scenario… Who says 2012 isn’t being completely blown out of proportion? (Which IMO it is) Who ever actually said anything is gonna happen at all? The Mayans’ calendar is going to end? Oh cool, so does mine on December 31st. But the world doesn’t end on mine… It usually just means that 2011 is over and 2012 is just starting.

And Nostradamus… That guy that most of his predictions are so vague that they could mean anything? I could come up with some vague predictions, too. I predict tomorrow that some companies stocks will fall, and others will rise. Tomorrow, the sun will shine in other places, but will be overcast in others. I predict the oil companies will increase gas prices. btw I totally called the quake in Japan last month! I just didn’t publish it ’till now, because it was newly discovered. OMG I’m a prophet now!

I forgot where I’m going with this… Or what my question originally was… :P 10 points to whoever shows the most convincing ‘evidence’ that the world is really heading towards its doom. And plz no guess work like Nostradamus. I want hard physical evidence. Evidence that could be confirmed by science today; not just something published by some illiterate conspiracy theorist in his mom’s basement.

admin answers:

You won’t find any hard physical evidence that the world is going to end in 2012 for the simple reason that there isn’t any.
Here’s a list of things that won’t happen in 2012, particularly December 21st:
Planetary alignments: There aren’t any alignments of more than 2 planets.
Alignment of Sun with centre of galaxy: Can’t happen because the centre of the galaxy is not in the plane of the Earth’s orbit.
Once in 26,000 year alignment of the solstice sun and galactic equator: Happened in 1998. Did anything happen as a result? Of course not. Alignments mean nothing in measurable physical terms anyway.
Passing of the Solar System through the galactic central plane: Won’t happen for 30 million years or so.
Planet X/Nibiru: Doesn’t exist. If it was the size the claimants describe and following the trajectory they indicate, it would now be visible to the naked eye.
Pole shift: Magnetic pole reversal takes thousands of years and may not start for thousands of years. There is no reason to link it with 2012. As for rotational pole shift, that would take a huge amount of force on the Earth. Where is this force going to come from? Basically, it’s a physical impossibility.
Solar storms: The Sun is due to reach a maximum in its 11 year cycle in 2013, not 2012 as some doom merchants tell you. No reason to suppose the next peak will be any more energetic than normal.
26,000 year precessional movement of Earth’s axis: Doesn’t ‘begin’, ‘end’ or ‘wobble’ but carries on smoothly and unnoticed by all.
The doomsday cranks like to tell us that lots of other cultures predicted the end of the world for this date. That and ‘predictions’ by the Bible, I Ching and Nostradamus have all been contrived to agree with this date and are all false.

Paul asks…

what is the VI Editor in Linux? 5 stars will be awarded?

Im not sure what this is… my teacher gave me a bunch of text and wants me to get in theyre linux box whatever that means… heres an example?

Take the following text and figure out a way to get it to our linux box (hint: emailing to your unix account on our server is an easy way)

Use VI to replace the following words in the text:

“Bill Gates” with “Mr. Noodles”,
“Gates” with “Noodles”,
“Paul Allen” or “Allen” as “The Other Guy”,
“Altair” as “WTF”,
Apple” as “The Prodigal Son”,
“Tandy” as “Who?”
and “Microsoft” as “Blue Screen of Death”

“Bill Gates was born in Seattle in 1955, the second of three children in a well-to-do family. His father, William H. Gates II, was a lawyer, while his mother, Mary Gates, was a teacher, a regent of the University of Washington, and member of several corporate boards. Gates was first exposed to computers at school in the late 1960s with his friend Paul Allen, the son of two Seattle librarians. By the time Gates was 14, the two friends were writing and testing computer programs for fun and profit.

In 1972 they established their first company, Traf-O-Data, which sold a rudimentary computer that recorded and analyzed traffic data. Allen went on to study computer science at the University of Washington and then dropped out to work at Honeywell, while Gates enrolled at Harvard. Inspired in 1975 by an issue of Popular Electronics that showed the new Altair microcomputer kit just released by MITS Computer, Gates and Allen wrote a version of BASIC for the machine. Later that year Gates left college to work full time developing programming languages for the Altair, and he and Allen relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be near MITS Computer, where Allen took a position as director of software development. Gates and Allen named their partnership Micro-soft. Their revenues for 1975 totaled $16,000.

A year later, Gates published “An Open Letter to Hobbyists” in the Altair newsletter, in which he enjoined users to avoid illegally copied software. Arguing that software piracy prevented “good software from being written,” Gates wrote prophetically, “Nothing would please me more than being able to hire ten programmers and deluge the hobby market with good software.” In November 1976 Allen left MITS to devote his full attention to Microsoft, and the company’s tradename was registered. In 1977 Apple and Radio Shack licensed Microsoft BASIC for their Apple II and Tandy computers, with the Apple license going for a flat fee of $21,000. As Apple sold a million machines complete with BASIC, Microsoft’s unit revenues dropped to two cents a copy.

That same year Microsoft released its second programming language, Microsoft FORTRAN, which was followed in 1978 by a version of COBOL. Both were written for the CP/M operating system, one of many available in the rapidly expanding but still unstandardized microcomputer market. As CP/M was adopted by computer manufacturers including Sirius, Zenith, and Sharp, Microsoft became the leading distributor for microcomputer languages. By the end of 1978 Microsoft had 13 employees, a sales subsidiary in Japan, and $1 million in revenues. The following year Gates and Allen moved the company to Bellevue, Washington.”

Note: This assignment, by no means, is a slam to Microsoft – without whom, I would not be able to pay my bills.
Points/Due Date
This assignment is worth 15 points – please submit it to Angel (Angel->Lessons->Wee3->DropBox:Assignment4 – The VI Editor) by Monday July 5th, 11:59pm. There will be a 30point quiz on VI commands open next Tuesday, July 6th.
My question isn’t do my homework for me please? its what exactly am I suppose to do, like take those words he has given me and replace them in the editor with the long essay or what?

admin answers:

Vi is the oldest text editor out there. It was written by Bill Joy, who went on to co-found Sun Microsystems, when he was a grad student at the University of California at Berkeley and their Trustees own the copyright.

Linux is actually a kernel written originally to run programs written for UNIX. In fact, most of the basic programs come from BSD Unix which was Joy’s project, from the Free Software Foundation’s GNU Tools, and from the X-Windows consortium (now X.org).

Not all versions of Linux have vi and in fact you might just use vi on your unix account which should have it.

I’ve linked to a tutorial in sources, and Oh. In 1989 a temp agency sent me to a Providence RI engineering firm which sat me down at a unix terminal called up vi and said “type.” That was MY introduction to vi. You won’t find it easy, but I assure you it will be easier/
