Your Questions About Publishing Software For Mac

Joseph asks…

2009 Mac Mini Graphics Card Differences?

I’m considering buying a new 2009 Mac Mini from the Apple Store.
I notice that the difference between the two models that you cannot upgrade through the store is the graphics card.
The $599 model has only 128MB of RAM in the graphics card, while the $799 model has 256MB of RAM in the graphics card.

I’m not a huge PC gamer, but I suppose the potential is there if I could boot Windows. Most of the heavy lifting it would be doing would be from desktop publishing/graphic design software.

Is it a good idea for me to spring for the more expensive model with the superior graphics card?

Thanks!

Go with the more expensive model. The graphics is shared with the main RAM, so the more you have the better. There’s no way of upgrading graphics in the mini, so what you get when you buy is what you get. The higher end model has more memory overall, which I would definitely recommend for any sort of graphics work. If you don’t want to spend the extra $200, just upgrade the RAM when you get it from 1GB to 2GB. You will definitely notice the difference.

Good luck, enjoy your new computer!!

How much does .Mac cost per year?

I know the software cost about $100, but how much does it cost for the membership?

I’m not talking about the OS, I’m talking about the .Mac suite used for publishing, etc.

admin answers:

Is $ 99 per year. You get good stuff like one click publishing for the iWeb.. All you contacts in address book and bookmarks in your browsers sync up with iDisk and dotmac account , where u can access these from anywhere in the world through a Mac or Windows. U get a 1 GB of Harddisk space in the web which is like one more harddisk on ur computer and can be accesses from any where in the world. And can share photocast with other mac friends automatically when u add photographs or delete photographs. And also the Mail service which is cool . And create close groups between ur friends or teams..

How can I become an amateur graphic designer?

I’m 12, aiming at a career in graphic design and/or desktop publishing. I already create visually pleasing reports, essays, papers, and projects, I’m on the Yearbook team, interested in photography, and would work as an editor for our school newspaper if we had one. I’m wondering if there are any classes and/or software you’d recommend to further my skills. My goals are to get my skills good enough to the point where I would be able to sell my services. I have a Mac and already own copies of Pages, Word, iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, and Scribus (open source desktop publishing software – I don’t really like it.). Thanks!

You are an amateur – so the question is what path to being a professional and getting paid. And for someone your age, I would think doing volunteer work in your community, making posters and brochures for groups that could use them for fund raising but otherwise could not afford to pay someone, so you build a reputation and portfolio of finished work.
