Your Questions About Publishing Software For Mac

Steven asks…
Need help with file size and resolution in Photoshop CS5 and other editing software in mac?
Can someone tell me if PS reads a file’s resolution and file size when it opens the file, each file? I’m having a hard time understanding this in PS – some images I took of my artwork are causing problems when I upload – I need full-size large files for printing and the images read as 300 resolution and the pixel proportions are high but the document size is quite small – and that’s been a problem with publishing larger prints. The camera settings are for large files in a 10.2 mp camera and fine setting, I assumed that would give me the best quality file after a raw file. I don’t know if my problem is how to take the photos to get a better file – or something in the photo editing software. And bigger files were never an issue until publishing for print, so now I have to ensure having the largest and highest resolution file I can get, and don’t know quite how to get that and not lose it in photo editing and saving to jpeg. Any help, suggestions, point me in a direction?
I asked a similar question in software but need photographers so that’s why I’m trying here. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Joedh – when I print my own, I don’t go large but I’m uploading work to a publishing site, they need large files and the files I’ve been uploading have come out too small so I couldn’t figure out what was happening. I figured out that ‘save as’ settings were saving the files at medium size image as default, so I changed that. I never had to worry about big before, so didn’t need to think of these.
If you check back here again, would you know and answer if you do – if PS actually reads the resolution and size of each file as it opens – it makes me crazy not knowing if the settings are PS default settings or if PS is actually reading the quality of the image file.

Good answer from Joedh. As for your second question, PS does not have a “default” resolution setting it puts on all photos. It displays what comes from the camera. I have, let me count, 6 different digital cameras, from small point and shoots, to a Canon 5D MkII. I don’t think any of them output at the same resolution. The photos are all different resolution when opened in PS. I think the 5D is 350 ppi, while one of my point and shoot cameras is 172 ppi. I think my wife’s Nikon is 200 ppi. PS just reads and displays whatever comes out of the camera. It is all rather meaningless anyway. DPI is a print function. As long as your pixel dimensions are large enough, the resolution, ppi, is going to fall into place as needed for print output. If you have your camera at it’s largest size, highest quality setting, you should have no problems printing out at most any size you want from a pro level lab or publishing site.

Is it legal to buy macromedia suit 8 mac OEM and build and publish websites?
the term OEM doesn’t work with apple because apple don’t sell any software in bundles – the software ‘bundles’ they sell is just basically a discount. Is it legal to buy this software and install it on my macbook or mac pro?
THIS IS NOT A ILLEGAL / LAW BREAKING ADVICE QUESTION – IF IT IS REMOVED, I WILL REPORT THIS SITE FOR UNFAIR JUDGEMENT OF PEOPLE!!!

admin answers:
I don’t see why it would be illegal. And yelling at the people who are here to answer your question isn’t very nice!

Is this a quiz?
1. A High resolution flatbed scanner – always the most reliable and accurate.
2. D “There are four steps that nearly all von Neumann CPUs use in their operation: fetch, decode, execute, and writeback.” Wikipedia
3. A – only because the majority of home computers use it, not because it is better. Mac OS X is Unix-based and from experience the Mac OS is far and away the simpler and more powerful and reliable interface.
