Your Questions About Publishing Software Programs

Joseph asks…

PURPOSE of VECTOR ART?

What’s the purpose of vector art? I have a graphics application course this fall coming up and I thought it’d be interesting to take. It’s an introductory course. The description says that we will use Adobe illustrator, Adobe photoshop and QuarkXpress. Are these considered “desktop publishingsoftware programs? Also, do you have to know how to draw to do vector art? It looks really interesting.

Thanks!

Vector art is great for projects where you’ll need something that won’t lose detail and resolution when you enlarge it. Vector art is resolution-independent — you can take a vector file and blow it up as big as you want and NOT lose one ounce of detail.
All of those application are desk top publishing and also graphic arts programs.
You don’t need to know how to draw — and once you get the hang of using the pen tool in Illustrator, you can recreate just about anything. I redraw logos and illustrations at work all the time simply by tracing over a scan of the original.
Vector art can include screens

Anyone know how to get a children’s book published?

I have created some pretty educational and enjoyable children’s books but dont know how to go about getting them published. Is there a software program anyone recommends or a website that could guide me in the right direction?

admin answers:

Start by finding a literary agent to represent you. Make sure the book is as perfect as you can get it, then send query letters to agents. This is a one page letter describing your book and a little about yourself.

There are several websites out there that will help you find an agent, my favorite is QueryTracker.net at http://www.querytracker.net/ . It is free and has a list of literary agents and also tools to help you keep track of who you already queried and who you haven’t, plus more.

They do a good job of keeping the crooks off their lists, but it is still a good idea to double check at http://www.sfwa.org/beware/twentyworst.h…
There are a lot of crooks out there. Never pay anyone to read or publish your book. A real agent will never ask for money except as a percentage of your royalties.

Keep in mind that finding an agent and getting published is not an easy process. Some people have to query hundreds of agents before they find one who will accept them (sadly, some never get accepted), but be persistent and keep trying.

You should also visit http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums one of the largest forums for writers. They can be very helpful.

Good luck.

Betty asks…

Does ANYONE know if there is a program I could buy that is similar to MS Picture It Publishing Platinum 2002?

My OS is Windows 7, I could use the program on XP but have not been able to use it with Vista (which I hated) or Windows 7, but I seriously LOVE this program and have used it for years (even with all the crashes, bugs associated with it) it just does so much that other editing/publishing programs don’t do all in one place, my question is does anyone know if there is software available that is very similar to Picture It or if there might be an online version I could buy? Thanks so much for your help!

admin answers:

You can still use it on Windows 7 through Windows XP Mode. You can get Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 for free on Pro and Ultimate versions of Windows 7. And if you only have Windows 7 Home Premium, then you can pay for a Windows Anytime Upgrade to Pro or Ultimate and be able to use Windows XP Mode.

Windows XP Mode download: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

If you have only Windows 7 Home Premium, you can upgrade it to at least Pro for $90: http://www.staples.com/Microsoft-Windows-7-Home-Premium-to-Professional-Upgrade/product_820229?cmArea=SEARCH
